BROOKLYN, NY — Two people were shot by police in Crown Heights on Thursday afternoon, and one was later pronounced dead, the New York City Police Department said.

According to Jeffrey Maddrey, the NYPD chief of the department, the chaotic incident began after gunshots were heard on a scanner near Classon Avenue and Fulton Street.

Maddrey said a nearby witness told the cops that gunshots were fired from a black Honda with Mississippi license plates. Then, police found the described car nearby and started pursuing it.

A man, a woman, and an infant were in the Honda, and when the driver realized police were following them, the car tried to speed away, getting as far as the intersection of Utica Avenue and Park Place in Crown Heights when they got cornered by traffic and police, Maddrey said.

Cops then got out of their police car, guns drawn, and gave commands for the two to get out of the car with their hands drawn, Maddrey said.

Maddrey said that when the man got out of the car, he was holding a gun pointed at the officers, and the cops started firing at him when they saw the firearm.

The man was shot several times in the body and the woman, who tried to run away, was shot twice in the thigh, police said.

When cops realized that there was a baby in the car, they stopped shooting, and the baby was not physically injured, Maddrey said.

All three were taken to a local hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, and the woman is in stable condition, Maddrey said.

A semi-automatic weapon with an extended magazine was recovered at the scene, Maddrey said.

None of the officers were hit by gunfire, Maddrey said.

Authorities estimated that 18 to 19 shots were fired by officers at the man and woman.

Maddrey said that the man who was killed was wanted for a "particularly vicious" homicide in March. The man's name has not been made public, pending family notification.
