77-Year-Old Lefferts Gardens Hospital Patient Fatally Assaulted by Fellow Resident

Police arrested Larry Hammond, 66, a resident at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, and charged him with assault.

LEFFERTS GARDENS, BROOKLYN — A 65-year-old resident of the Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center has been arrested and charged with assault after fatally attacking a 77-year-old man in the hospital, police said.

According to the NYPD, officers were called to the Center, located at 585 Schenectady Ave., at 2;30 p.m. on Oct. 23 following the attack, which had taken place the previous day.

The 77-year-old, whose name has not been released, was being treated for head trauma at the time, police said.

The officers investigated the incident, and subsequently arrested resident Larry Hammond.

Hammond's victim died the next day, according to the NYPD. The cause of death is being investigated by the Medical Examiner's office, and the investigation into the case remains ongoing.

"We extend our sincere condolences to the families impacted by this tragic incident," said Kingsbrook spokeswoman Enid Dillard in a statement. "We are currently working with the NYPD on the ongoing investigation of this matter."
