Bernie Sanders Group Backing Socialist Candidate In Council Race

Our Revolution endorsed Jabari Brisport in the city council race in Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A major political group backed by Bernie Sanders is endorsing the Green Party candidate in a central Brooklyn city council race.

"Our Revolution" announced this week that it is throwing its support behind Jabari Brisport, a 30-year-old from Prospect Heights and member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Brisport is running in the race for the 35th Distrcit seat on the New York City Council, which includes Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill and part of Bed-Stuy.

"As more and more New Yorkers face rising housing costs and growing income inequality, Jabari is the right choice to prioritize affordable housing development, police reform, and ensuring access to quality public education," Nina Turner, the executive director of Our Revolution, said in a statement." Our local group, Our Revolution Berning Green and supporters across the country plan to work tirelessly to make sure he is elected to City Council on November 7th."

Brisport has hit on many of the same issues Sanders did during his upstart run for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016. Brisport has railed against "billionaire developers" and called for public land — including a controversial vacant armory the city wants to redevelop — to be placed into a public land trust.

"I poured countless hours into the Sanders campaign because I believed in his message," Brisport said in a statement. "Now I know he believes in mine. This campaign has always been about building a district and city that fights back against capitalism and its descendants: homelessness, social breakdown, and the concentration of wealth and power in ever-fewer hands. The revolution is taking root in Brooklyn."

Brisport will square off against incumbent Laure Cumbo, a Democrat, in the general election on Nov. 7. Christine Parker, a Republican, is also running.
