Brooklyn Grocery Sells 'Fresh Children Cutlets' Special for Columbus Day
This Columbus Day, "fresh children cutlets" were going for just $1.49 per pound at the Pioneer Supermarket in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.
PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS, BROOKLYN — In a dark, if accidental, conjuring of the atrocities committed by Christopher Columbus across the Americas half a millennium ago, a popular Brooklyn supermarket at Parkside and Ocean avenues posted a flyer in its window this year — special for Columbus Day — advertising "fresh children cutlets" for $1.49 per pound.
And as if this sweeping metaphor could get any cringier: The name of the supermarket, situated on the southeast edge of Prospect Park, is "Pioneer."

A Pioneer employee who did not give his name, reached by phone Wednesday, called the sign a "misprint."

Paulina Bailey, a shopper standing outside the supermarket, reacted to the "children cutlets" sign in an interview with the New York Post. “The picture — the cutlets really do look like they could be... I don’t even want to think about it!” she said. “They need to fix the sign before someone walks by and has a heart attack.”
