Brooklyn Public Library Kicks Off 2017 Summer Reading Thursday

Here's what you need to know.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — The Brooklyn Public Library will kick off its 2017 Summer Reading program on Thursday with outdoor events at the main branch in Grand Army Plaza.

Things get started at 10:30 a.m. with a musical performance and run through 3 p.m. The library's summer reading program is meant to curb the "summer slide" and keep kids reading through the summer vacation.

This year's theme is "Build a Better World" and will highlight the importance of STEM education. You can read more about what's happening this summer here.

Here's the schedule of events for Thursday's kickoff, via the library:

10:30 a.m.: Musical Performance by Lucy Kalantari & the Jazz Cats

11:20 a.m.: Opening ceremony

12:00 p.m.: Build Your Story with Beam Center, Big Build with ArchForKids, Superball Factory with Mad Science of NYC; explore artifacts with Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum”

All Day: 4 and 20 Blackbirds cookie giveaway (while supplies last); additional activities for children and young people indoors
