City Awards $$ Contract For Grand Army Plaza Arch Restoration
Nearly $5 million dollars of public money has been awarded to a New Jersey firm for the huge project.
PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Over five years ago, former Mayor Bill de Blasio announced that he was pledging nearly $9 million to restore Grand Army Plaza.
And yesterday, a $5 million contract was finally awarded to restore the crown jewel of the historic plaza, the 1892 Soldiers' and Sailors' Memorial Monument.
The contract was awarded to New Jersey contractor Western Waterproofing Co, according to city records.

Since 2012, municipal records show that the contractor, who also operates under the name Western Specialty Contractors and Brisk Waterproofing Co, has been awarded nearly $130,000 in city contracts for work with the Department of Sanitation, the Department of Design and Construction and the Department of Corrections.
The contractor is not a minority or woman owned company, according to city records.

Grand Army Plaza's big restoration project was announced by de Blasio in 2018, but only started to get underway this past fall, according to the Prospect Park Alliance, the non-profit who maintains "Brooklyn's Backyard" along with the city.
In October, the group said the arch work should get underway spring 2024.
Patch asked the group for any updates to the project or any additional details about the new contract, but did not receive a response.
