Crown Heights Ex-Con Gets 55 Years for Pair of Brutal Robbery-Shootings
A 19-year-old woman who was one of Jovan Frederick's two victims still lives with a tracheotomy, prosecutors said.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A Crown Heights man convicted of shooting at two robbery victims in 2015, severely wounding one, was sentenced to 55 years in prison on Wednesday, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office announced.
Jovan Frederick, 34, was convicted in August of several serious charges, including first-degree robbery and second-degree attempted murder.
According to prosecutors, Frederick, 34, first tried to rob a 37-year-old man on Feb. 11 2015 at the corner of Maple Street and Kingston Avenue. After the man dropped $200 on the ground and ran away, Frederick fired a gun at him, though he missed.

Then, on Feb. 13, Frederick used a gun to hold up a 19-year-old woman who lived on Maple Street, also in Crown Heights, prosecutors said. After she said she didn't have any money, Frederick shot her several times in the abdomen, prosecutors said, sending her to the hospital for four months. According to the DA's office, that victim still lives with a tracheotomy.
DNAinfo reported at the time that Frederick had previously served time in jail for a 2011 robbery, and had been a free man for less than a month when he committed his crimes.

The shooting that Frederick committed at Maple and Kingston occurred in the NYPD's 71st Precinct. Through Nov. 20, major crimes were collectively down 12.2 percent in the 71st compared to the same time period last year, according to NYPD statistics.
Shootings, however, have ticked up slightly. A total of 21 shootings with 28 victims were recorded in the precinct through Nov. 20, compared to 17 shootings with 26 victims during the same period in 2015.
