Crown Heights' First Free High-Speed Internet Kiosks Coming Online Soon
LinkNYC has plans to install hundreds of the gigabit internet kiosks in Brooklyn.

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — The first two free high-speed internet kiosks installed in Crown Heights will be coming online "in the coming weeks," according to LinkNYC, the tech company consortium behind the wifi network.
The kiosks, located at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Union Street and Franklin Avenue and President Street, each broadcast a gigabit wifi signal for 150 feet in every direction, according to the spokesman.
Each "Link" also offer free domestic phone calls, 911 emergency calling, and maps, but no longer provides free internet service on a built-in tablet, following complaints that some individuals were using said kiosks, shall we say, inappropriately in public.

All currently active and recently installed kiosks are mapped on LinkNYC's website.
According to the spokesman, hundreds of Links are planned for Brooklyn, though there's no public roll-out schedule.

LinkNYC also can't provide precise dates for when the kiosks will be turned on, he said, because it can't control the work of city agencies or companies involved in the project, like Verizon and Con Edison.
While there's no formal process by which a community member can request a kiosk, the spokesman said residents can reach out to LinkNYC by emailing hello@link.nyc.
