An Intimate Evening of Dance and Conversation with Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company

A preview of an edgy new dance repertory, live music by cellist Jessie Reagan Mann, a chance to meet and engage in conversation with members of the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company (www.cddc.info) and an opportunity for the audience to share their “real time” feedback of the performances create the unique components of “Up Close and Personal,” coming to the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn on Friday, May 18th at 8 p.m.
Company founder and artistic director, Carolyn Dorfman, will share a glimpse of “Interior Designs,” a new work-in-progress, that involves the integration of art forms and performance practices that reveal the interior worlds of both performers and the audience. “Up Close and Personal” is one of several intimate showings planned during which audience members will be asked to write, tweet, record, and/or use electronic response devices to capture their thoughts and feedback in real time as the performance is happening. This research will be used to shape elements of the dance itself and affords a unique opportunity to engage the audience in the creative process, explore their own experiences during performances and perhaps change how they participate in future performances. “Art is a dialogue between artist and audience. Each experience and perception, accumulated history and events shape the ultimate creation that dynamically exists. We are each unique and our experience is unique, on and off the stage. It is this essence that I hope to capture.”
Excerpts from other company repertory created by Carolyn Dorfman and Doug Elkins will be performed that evening including “Keystone,” “Narcoleptic Lovers,” and “Hourglass,” with live music by cellist Jessie Reagen Mann. Company member, Mica Bernas, will share her work in progress, “Maria, Marie.” As part of their commitment to artist development, CDDC offers select dancers the opportunity to create on the company. Choreographers are given dancers, space and critical feedback in the process. Select works are produced in CDDC’s season performances.
The Mark Morris Dance Center is located at 3 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at BrownPaperTicket.com or through the Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company at 908-687-8855.
