CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — It is no secret that COVID-19 is surging once again in New York and New York City.

The state has broken its new positive COVID case count record three days in a row, with another 22,478 New Yorkers testing positive on Sunday — 12,404 of which who live in New York City.

Dozens of reports have detailed the long lines waiting for COVID tests, or the difficulty of simply finding a place in New York City neighborhoods to get tested.

The jump in COVID cases comes just before millions of people in New York City planned to travel for the holidays, which is creating an even bigger jump in people looking for tests.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday morning that eight new major testing sites would be opening across the city over the next two days and that free at-home testing kits will be sent out to "high volume" areas this week.

Between Dec. 11 and Dec. 17, 1,590 people in Crown and Prospect Heights' ZIP codes tested positive for the virus, according to the city. The positivity rate stands as high as 9.84 percent across the five ZIP codes, data shows.
