HPD data shows nearly 800 housing violations since 2010, according to the website justfix.org, most occurring after Marion Scott Real Estate issued an $8 million dollar short-term loan around 2015 to help the struggling building balance its books.
The real estate company has since helped the building secure a $13 million mortgage in 2019, with the promise that the building would remain affordable for 30 years, according to their website.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the fire marshal.
