Henderson was a "beloved" crossing guard at Chelsea's Avenues The World School, according to state Sen. Brad Hoylman-Sigal.

The Avenues community and Henderson's loved ones launched a GoFundMe to support his family which had raised over $32,800 Tuesday morning.

"Heroes often go unsung, but their acts of bravery and kindness echo in the hearts of those they've touched," GoFundMe organizers wrote.

"Richard Henderson, was not only a guardian at the crosswalks of the school where he tirelessly worked; Rich was a guardian to all those lucky enough to know him."

The money raised would help Henderson's family cover funeral and other expenses, according to the GoFundMe.

"Richard's life was a mosaic of selflessness and dedication," GoFundMe organizers wrote. "Rich was a peaceful man, who never had a quarrel with the world but lost his life trying to quell one."
