CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A Brooklyn mother has been charged with murder after her 9-year-old daughter was found dead in their Crown Heights home, according to police and reports.
Shemene Cato, 48, was arrested Monday just 24 hours after Shalom Guifarro, 9, was found dead in their Lincoln Place apartment near Franklin Avenue, police said.
Shalom — who had cuts and bruises on her head and bite marks on her back — died of multiple blunt-force trauma injuries, the city's medical examiner told the New York Times.

Cato was notorious in the neighborhood as an overprotective mother who was often seen yelling at her children, neighbors told the Times.
Shalom's body was found after the owner of the restaurant below called police to report a foul odor coming from her apartment.
Cato is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney.
