Opening in Prospect Heights: Fancy BBQ Joint 'Urban Smoke'

Urban Smoke will soon expand to two other locations in Brooklyn, too — one in Bed-Stuy and one in Lefferts Gardens near Crown Heights.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — A hand-painted "You'll Love What We're Smoking" sign, shaped like an arrow and pointing at an unmarked door, went up at 417 Prospect Place in recent days, according to the online forum Brooklynian.

Residents on the forum said they initially assumed the worst of the building's new first-floor tenant. Vape shop? Non-permitted pot dispensary?

Nope. (Looks like Prospect Heights is still a few good years away from becoming the next Williamsburg/East Village.) The future storefront at 417 Prospect will, instead, be a tiny new BBQ joint called Urban Smoke, serving a big, loud menu full of meets and cheeses and comfort sauces galore.

A representative for the LLC that owns the building says construction crews have been in and out recently, but he wasn't sure of an exact opening date.

We've contacted Urban Smoke for more details.

In the meantime, though, here's what we know from the restaurant's website:

  • It fancies itself "a modern global approach to the traditional barbecue pit"
  • That said, Urban Smoke promises to use only "locally sourced and highly sustainable ingredients" in order to "ensure minimum impact on the environment"
  • The restaurant's meats, smoked using "100% seasoned oak wood," can either be purchased by the pound or inside a pre-made sandwich
  • Sandwiches include the Rusty Oyster, "smoked pulled mushroom with Korean BBQ sauce and kimchi," and Rosie Cheeks, "smoked pulled beef cheek with house BBQ sauce, pickle chips and crispy shallots"
  • Also on the menu: Some crazy corn and chili concoctions, a bomb-looking dish called Hoppin Joe (with "Carolina Gold rice, black-eyed peas and red-eye gravy") and a bunch of slaws and salads
  • Prices for all this stuff have yet to be announced

What do you think? A good fit for the nabe?
