PROSPECT HEIGHTS, NY — Runners will make a long loop through Brooklyn's Backyard Monday evening as temps soar well over 80 degrees.

The Brooklyn 5K, hosted by New York Road Runners, will kick off at the western edge of Prospect Park Lake at 6:45 p.m. Monday.

Runners will make a 3.1-mile loop around the park, running through the park first on East Drive and coming back down on West, landing around Center and West drives.

Temps were expected to sit in the mid-80's around the start of the race, a heat sure to add extra challenge to the competition.

As usual, there is something in it for the winners Monday. It's not clear how much, but Monday's top runners in each gender and age category will take home an award for their efforts. Results can be tracked online.

Monday's race will bring competitors one step closer to the iconic New York City Marathon in 2024. Runners who race in nine of 30 qualifying courses — including the Brooklyn 5K — and volunteer at one more could secure guaranteed entry into the main event.

In May, some 26,000 runners took on a 13.1-mile course for the largest half marathon in 2023 to date, zipping from Prospect Park to the Coney Island Boardwalk.

The next Brooklyn 5K won't run until December's Frosty, though another 5K will trace around Harlem in August.
