UPDATE: 'Snow Alert' in NYC Extended Through Saturday

About three inches expected overnight and Saturday morning.

Update, Jan. 20, 2:47 p.m.: The city has extended its Snow Alert through Saturday in advance of an approaching storm, with as much as three to five inches of the white stuff possible, according to the National Weather Service, with AccuWeather reporting 2-3 inches expected for Prospect Heights.

The Metropolitan Transportation Agency is also  scheduled maintenance on many subway lines because of the forecast snowstorm.

The city's snow drought may be coming to an end.

With the first measurable snowfall  forecast Thursday night into Friday, the Department of Sanitation issued a rare——"snow alert" for the five boroughs.

The alert will begin at 6 p.m. To prepare for inclement weather, workers will conduct equipment readiness tests, load salt spreaders and install tire chains, according to DSNY.

Snow is also forecast for Saturday, with as much as 1 to 3 inches possible.
