SEE: Colorful Murals Transform Vanderbilt Avenue Open Street
The popular Prospect Heights street has new murals on its roadway and barriers. The transformation will culminate with a kids art project.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — Brooklynites might notice some colorful additions to the popular Open Street on Vanderbilt Avenue.
The outdoor dining destination is the site of two new mural projects that have transformed its roadway and several barriers along the street, according to the Open Street organizers.
Among the murals is a "Carpet Collage" that stretches along the street itself. The mural, presented through the Department of Transportation's Art Program, was completed by artist Cara Lynch, who has been behind several public art pieces throughout the city.

"New Yorkers have always thought of our streets, sidewalks, and public spaces as an extension of home — especially for the last year and a half," Lynch said of the Vanderbilt piece. "I hope this mural makes you think of this city as your living room."
The street mural joins several other, smaller murals that Jeff Beler curated for the jersey barriers on Vanderbilt between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street. The Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council, which oversees the Open Street, tapped Beler for the project.

The smaller murals aim to spread positivity and celebrate the community as Vanderbilt Avenue's Open Street prepares for a performance series this weekend.
The project, sponsored by the Citizens Committee of New York City, will culminate Saturday with a collaborative mural for kids to paint between 2 and 4 p.m.
Performances are set to run at Vanderbilt between 2 and 7 p.m. that day through the city's Open Boulevards program, which selected 10 Open Streets to add cultural programming to this summer.
