Where to Work: Dean Street Café

Sick of typing at your kitchen table? Prospect Heights Patch looks at the best places to work on your laptop.

For those of us that don't have an office to work in, it can be difficult to always work from home.

Cafes are our refuges, but some are more conducive to serious work than others.

In this occasional column, I'll take a look at area restaurants and cafes not for the quality of their food or lattes, but for their work atmosphere: the availabilty of outlets and WiFi, whether you have to wait for a table, and most importantly, how willing the staff is to let you, assuming you keep ordering, stay for hours.

Our looked at Fish & Sip. Today we look at , on the corner of Dean and Underhill.

At night this lovely neighborhood spot is full restaurant with upscale pub food and often, live music. But during the day they turn themselves into "Dean Street Cafe" opening their doors to laptoppers and toddler alike.

They have free WiFi and power strips on opposite walls, allowing nearly all the tables to plug in. They play music, but it's not too loud.

There is a coffee bar with Stumptown coffee and fresh pastries—today they had ginger pear muffins, nutella-swirl coffee cake and ham and cheddar scones.

The lunch menu is short and sweet, including a soup of the day ($6) sandwiches and burgers ($9-13 including fries), such appetizers as pulled pork sliders ($4) and fried calamari with red pepper aioli ($9), and cheesecake or chocolate cake for dessert ($6-$7),

The times I've come there have been plenty of tables, and the owners have no problem with you staying through lunch, providing you order.

The downside is that the cafe is only open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.; if you're the type who works afternoons and evenings, you'll have to move to a new spot midway through.

The Particulars: Dean Street Cafe, 755 Dean St. at Underhill, 718-783-3326, Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
