19-Year-Old Waiting At Queens Bus Stop Fatally Struck By Driver: NYPD

A 19-year-old woman died after an SUV driver fell asleep behind the wheel and struck her on Rockaway Beach over the weekend, police said.

QUEENS — A 19-year-old woman from Hell's Kitchen died after an SUV driver fell asleep behind the wheel and struck her near Rockaway Beach on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Ava Conklin was standing at the bus stop in the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 108th Street when a 29-year-old man driving a 2021 Hyundai Venue fell asleep and struck her about 2:15 p.m., the NYPD said.

The SUV mounted the sidewalk and crashed against three metal benches before striking Conklin, according to authorities.

The 19-year-old was taken to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where she died, police said.

The driver was taken into custody for questioning, and no arrests have been made, the NYPD said.
