📰 News we're reading

1. Five suspects wanted in Flushing schoolyard assault, robbery and stabbing of teen: NYPD (qns.com) — A teenager was stabbed and robbed in the schoolyard behind P.S. 20 in Flushing, and police are searching for five suspects caught on surveillance. The boy was hospitalized in stable condition after EMS took him to Jacobi in the Bronx, even though NewYork-Presbyterian Queens is much closer, and the NYPD is offering a reward for tips.

2. Drug trafficking operation along Roosevelt Avenue corridor in Jackson Heights dismantled: DA (amny.com) — Queens prosecutors say a long-running open-air drug market on a Jackson Heights residential block near Roosevelt Avenue has been dismantled, with 16 people indicted after an undercover investigation. Three alleged ringleaders from Queens neighborhoods face potential life sentences, and authorities seized large quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, and other drugs, plus a handgun and cash, in a case officials say aims to reclaim local streets.

3. Permits filed for mixed-use building with 227 residential units in Jamaica (qns.com) — A 14-story mixed-use building with 227 likely rental apartments is planned for a parking lot at 88-02 162nd Avenue in Jamaica, Queens, bringing new housing and commercial space to the neighborhood. The project would include cellar space, 41 parking spots, and easy access to the Parsons Boulevard F train and multiple Q bus lines, though no demolition or completion dates are set yet.

4. NYC transit changes in 2026: Subways, buses, LIRR, Metro-North, tolls (fox5ny.com) — Queens drivers and transit riders will see higher fares and tolls starting January 2026, but existing toll discounts for Queens residents stay intact. Subway and bus base fares rise to $3, LIRR and Metro-North tickets go up, and MetroCards are phased out in favor of OMNY, affecting how Queens commuters budget daily travel.

5. Will Mamdani's successor in Albany be Muslim? Rana Abdelhamid eyes his vacant Assembly seat. (rocketnews.com) — Campaign posters along Steinway Street in Astoria signal Rana Abdelhamid’s run for the Queens-based 36th Assembly District seat Zohran Mamdani will vacate when he becomes mayor. The 32-year-old Muslim organizer, daughter of Egyptian immigrants, hopes to build on Mamdani’s affordability-focused momentum and could become the first Muslim woman in the New York State Assembly, further elevating Queens’ growing Muslim political influence.
