40 Illegal Scooters Seized Off Queens Streets: DA

QUEENS, NY — Dozens of illegal scooters were seized off Queens streets in a crackdown last week, authorities said.

The two-day crackdown netted 43 scooters illegally parked on sidewalks along commercial strips in Long Island City, Corona, Elmhurst and Jackson Heights, officials said.

Nearly all confiscated scooters were unregistered, authorities said.

"The often careless and dangerous operation of motorized scooters on our roads, and even our sidewalks, has become an urgent concern," said Melinda Katz, district attorney for Queens, in a statement. "Their use to commit violent crimes and escape will not be tolerated and requires immediate action."

Queens district attorney's detectives and NYPD officers carried out the joint crackdown Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 in nearly a dozen different locations, authorities said.
