• Fires have claimed the lives of more than a dozen elderly NYC residents over the last 6 weeks (nydailynews.com) — A troubling spike in deadly fires has killed several elderly Queens residents in recent weeks, including victims in St. Albans, Jackson Heights, Queensbridge Houses and Astoria. FDNY officials warn that older New Yorkers are especially vulnerable and urge families to check electrical setups, space heaters and smoke detectors, and to create simple escape plans with their loved ones.

• The Orchard Nears Completion At 42–22 Orchard Street in Long Island City, Queens (newyorkyimby.com) — A new 70-story rental tower in Long Island City, now the tallest building in Queens, is opening applications for 248 income-restricted apartments through NYC Housing Connect. Rents are high but designated as “affordable” at 130% of area median income, and leasing is expected to begin in January, with a full suite of amenities and easy access to Queens Plaza and Queensboro Plaza trains.

• Pope names pro-immigrant pastor bishop of diocese where Trump's Mar-a-Lago is located (wusf.org) — A Queens-based priest who has long served immigrant parishioners in Corona’s Our Lady of Sorrows, the largest parish in the Diocese of Brooklyn, has been tapped by Pope Leo XIV to become bishop of Palm Beach, Florida. His advocacy for migrants, many from Queens’ Latino community, will now shape his leadership in the diocese that includes Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate.
