6 Injured Including Five Firefighters During 5-Alarm Fire In Queens: FDNY

A Red Cross command center has been set up at P.S. 239.​​

QUEENS, NY — At least six people, including five firefighters, were injured after a five-alarm fire at a Queens apartment building early Tuesday morning.

The fire broke at 1824 Madison St. around 3:30 a.m., the FDNY said. The blaze started on the first floor of the building and quickly rose to a fifth alarm an hour later.

Two firefighters suffered serious injuries and three others suffered minor injuries from the fire, including one firefighter who was struck in the head by a falling air conditioning unit. They were all taken to a local hospital for treatment, along with one civilian.

More than 270 firefighters responded to the scene. At least 30 families were displaced by the fire, officials said.

“This is the second five-alarm fire this year, and we know that it is thanks to those who run towards the fire that so many New Yorkers were able to run towards safety," Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Fire marshals will determine the cause of the blaze.
