Armed Man Fatally Shot By Police Outside Queens Precinct

The incident happened at the 111th Precinct ​around 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday, police said.

QUEENS, NY — A 79-year-old man was fatally shot by police Tuesday night after he apparently pointed a gun at an officer outside a police precinct in Queens.

The incident happened at the 111th Precinct around 6:40 p.m., police said.

A 79-year-old man walked up to the building and initiated a conversation with a police officer who was outside, Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera said during a press conference.

The man then suddenly pulled out a gun and pointed it at the officer. The officer's attempts to get the man to drop his weapon were unsuccessful.

Four other officers responded to the scene to try to de-escalate the situation.

The 79-year-old man ignored the commands to drop his weapon and officers subsequently shot him several times.

The man was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A loaded revolver was recovered at the scene.

Police are still investigating what led up to the incident and why the man came to the precinct.

The 79-year-old man's identity has not been released.

An investigation remains ongoing.
