QUEENS, NY — A man drew a fatal barrage of bullets from an NYPD cop by pointing what turned out to be a fake firearm at officers inside a Queens apartment, police officials said.

The fatal police shooting Monday morning remains under investigation, said NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.

Maddrey said the victim — a man in a fourth-floor dwelling inside Ocean Bay Apartments in Far Rockaway — had pointed what appeared to be a gun at officers.

"Our officers gave commands to drop the weapon, and then our officer discharged his firearm," he said.

Police recovered the man's weapon after the shooting and posted a photograph of it online.

"Right now, at first glance, it appears to be an imitation firearm," Maddrey said, adding an investigation will give a definitive answer.

The incident began with a 911 call at 10:30 a.m. about shots being fired inside the building at Beach Channel Drive and Elizabeth Avenue, officials said.

Two officers went up to the fourth floor and spoke with a man who had been arguing with his brother, Maddrey said. The cops went into an apartment, where they spoke with the brother from behind a backroom door, he said.

"Our members go to step into the door, and then the male pointed a firearm at them," he said.

One officer fired multiple gunshots at the man, Maddrey said.

“We don't have the exact count, but that’s all part of our investigation,” he said.

Mayor Eric Adams, during an unrelated news conference, said the cop shot the man in the stomach.

The two officers were treated at a local hospital, Maddrey said.

Many details about what happened were unclear after the shooting.

Maddrey, for example, pointed out the initial 911 call of shots fired appeared to be unfounded. He said the situation apparently stemmed from a domestic dispute between the two brothers.

"We don't have all the details of exactly what happened," he said.
