Dad And Son Swept From Raft Found Dead In Upstate River: Police

Authorities found the bodies of a Queens father and his 9-year-old boy Monday after they were swept down Neversink River while rafting.

QUEENS, NY -- The bodies of a Queens father and his nine-year-old son have been found three days after they were swept away while rafting in a New York river this weekend, state police said Monday.

Authorities had been searching for Marco Avila, and his son, Marcos, since the two were swept down Orange County's Neversink River in a rafting incident on Saturday morning, according to a spokesperson from the New York State Police Department.

The 46-year-old father was rafting with his son and another unidentified child near Oakland Valley Campground at about 10:30 a.m. when one of the kids fell overboard, police said.

Avila dove into the river and managed to rescue the child, but the raft flipped over just as he was able to get back on, authorities said. They never never resurfaced.

Police found the bodies of the father and son on Monday after combing the river for three days with help from forest rangers and emergency responders. They were found in the water near Shore Drive, police said.

Cops did not name the other child who was initially in the raft, and it was unclear whether that person was related to the father and son.
