Queens Buildings Collapse During Storm

Luckily, police say no one was inside the Far Rockaway buildings when they collapsed.

FAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS — Two residential buildings located on Beach 7 Street and Jarvis Avenue collapsed around 10.30 a.m. Tuesday morning, as Winter Storm Sandy swept the city with high winds and a mixture of snow and sleet.

The buildings on the 300 block of Beach 7 Street were under construction, and were unoccupied when they collapsed, an FDNY spokesman said. No injuries were reported.

The buildings are fenced off from the surrounding area, so their collapse did not pose any threats to public safety or nearby houses, officials said.

However, there were some traffic delays in the area while emergency personnel responded to the scene. "Use alternate routes," the city said.

The Department of Buildings was notified and responded to the scene. The cause of the collapse has yet to be determined, a DOB spokesman said.
