Celebrate Astronauts & Cinco De Mayo | Queens Events This Weekend

Here's a roundup of the most interesting things to do in Queens this weekend.

QUEENS, NY -- You may have heard by now that Saturday is Cinco de Mayo, but you probably didn't know it's also National Astronaut Day.

But which one to celebrate, you ask? It's a tough choice you won't have to make, thanks to one Queens bar mashing them both up into one big party.

That's just one of the cool events happening in Queens this weekend, but there are plenty more. Here's your weekly roundup:

Everyone Mingles: Cinco de Mayo In Space

Neighborhood: Astoria

What: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo and National Astronauts day as one with space piñatas, festive games, tequila and special mashup drinks. TVs will play a mix of old and new NASA videos and Mexican videos.

Cinco de Mayo 14-Hour Party

Neighborhood: Long Island City

What: Celebrate Cinco de Mayo for as long as you can keep up with $5 wine/ frozen drinks/beer/tequila shots, $1 tacos, $2 empanadas and $3 sliders from 1 - 3 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. Feel free to dress up or keep it casual cool, but no athletic wear is allowed. Admission is free, but you must mention the Meetup group in the link above to enter.

When: Saturday, May 5, 1 p.m. - 3 a.m.


Garden Therapy: A Daylong Retreat

Neighborhood: Far Rockaway

What: A free one-day retreat exploring the connection between the body, mind and outside world. Learn about four ways to experience peace - A tea ceremony, Buddhist meditation, Ayurveda and gardening - while examining how taste, texture, sound and lifestyle adjustments can help your physical and emotional state.

Where: Rockaway Summer House, 504 Beach 68th St.

When: Saturday, May 5, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.


New Amsterdam Festival

Neighborhood: Ridgewood

What: The Greater Ridgewood Historical Society's second annual New Amsterdam Festival complete with knockerball NYC food and live music, tours of historic houses and picnics. Adults can enjoy a flea market by Ridgewood Market, games, beer mead and cider, and raffles. For kids there will be games, crafts, paintings and historical reenactments.

Where: Vander-Ende Onderdonk House, 1820 Flushing Ave.

When: Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6, noon - 6 p.m.


12th Annual Earth Day Rockaway

Neighborhood: Far Rockaway

What: Enjoy a day of fun and free activities by the Rockaway Beach, including kite-making, recycling Olympics, a mock dolphin rescue, raptor demonstrations and more. The event aim to raise awareness of the Rockaway shoreline's natural resources. Live music and food are also included.

Where: Rockaway Waterfront Alliance RWA, 58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.

When: Saturday, May 5, noon - 4 p.m.


Mother's Day Astoria Tiny Market

Neighborhood: Astoria

What: Your one-stop shop for Mother's Day gifts, cards and treats. Cinco de Mayo drinks will also be available.

When: Saturday, May 5, 2 - 6 p.m.


Jennifer's Annual Flushing Bay Shoreline Cleanup

Neighborhood: Corona/Flushing

What: Join Empire Dragons, Guardians of Flushing Bay, Riverkeeper and the NYC Parks Department to clean up the Flushing Bay shoreline. Paddle in a dragon boat and learn about green infrastructure initiatives to restore NYC's waterways at this event in honor of Empire Dragons Founder Jennifer Meredino. Volunteers are advised to wear comfortable clothes and close-toed shoes.

Sacred Sites Of Flushing Walking Tour

Neighborhood: Flushing

What: Discover the sacred sites of a neighborhood known for its diversity in one of the most diverse counties in the world. Enjoy musical performances highlighting Flushing's vast religious offerings and visit sacred sites to learn more about the spiritual and cultural dimensions of its residents.
