QUEENS — Wednesday officially marked the first day of summer with the longest day of the year, but New York's waters showed another clear sign of the sunny days to come: dolphins.

Bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, pilot whales and Risso's dolphins can often be seen off the south shore of Long Island, according to New York's Department of Environmental Conservation.
The majority of dolphin sightings occur in the warm summer months when the water is productive.
