East River Bridges to Get $936K Makeover, City Says

The cash will fund repairs to all of the East River bridges.

QUEENS — A $191 million budget boost for repair work to the East River's bridges was announced Tuesday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the extra cash will mean about $312 million will be spent improving the Queensboro, Williamsburg, Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges each year. The work will continue through 2019.

The city has been spending $65 million-a-year since 2011.

The additional funding comes as part of de Blasio's Vision Zero plan, which seeks to minimize the number of NYC residents injured or killed in car accidents.

The current yearly budget of $312 million is the largest investment for the rehabilitation of the four bridges since 2010, when the city committed $682 million for repairs on the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges.

The Queensboro Bridge will have $392 million spent on it, mostly for repairs to the upper level of the bridge.

The Brooklyn Bridge repairs will cost $377 million over the three-year span. Manhattan Bridge will receive $127 million and the Williamsburg Bridge will receive $40 million.

The East River bridges are currently considered to be in 'fair' condition, according to the city.
