Fire In Queens NYCHA Building Kills 1, FDNY Says

FAR ROCKAWAY, QUEENS — A fire in a public housing building in the Rockaways left a woman dead Thursday morning, authorities said.

The blaze in a 10th-floor apartment in the 13-story building at 453 Beach 40th St. was reported just before 8:15 a.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

Medics pronounced the woman dead at the scene, the NYPD said. The fire was under control just after 8:40 a.m., the Fire Department spokesman said.

No other injuries were reported. The fire marshal will determine what caused the blaze, police said.

The building is part of the New York City Housing Authority's Beach 41st Street - Beach Channel Drive development in the Edgemere neighborhood.

The fatal fire is the second to strike the city's public housing in about a week. Another blaze killed a family of six last Wednesday at the Fred E. Samuels Apartments in Harlem.
