The campaign was launched on April 4. As of Monday afternoon, it had collected $33,600 from 366 contributors.

The MTA has five teams that specialize in retrieving belongings from train tracks. Commuters are urged to report all dropped items to the station agent or by using an emergency call box.

“We never want anybody to lean over, look at, get near, or climb down on the tracks under any circumstance,” MTA Communications Director Beth DeFalco told CBS. “I cannot underscore how dangerous it is, and deadly.”
