Man Arrested After Long Island Expressway Crash Kills 1, Hurts 6

A man is under arrest after a five-car collision on the Long Island Expressway Thursday left one dead and six injured.

MASPETH, QUEENS — A Long Island man is under arrest after a five-car collision on the Long Island Expressway in Queens Thursday left one dead and six injured, police said.

A 67-year-old man in a black Honda SUV was heading eastbound on the Long Island Expressway by Exit 17 about 1:30 p.m. when he veered to the left, flipped over the highway's center divider and landed in oncoming traffic, according to police.

Four drivers heading west then crashed into the SUV, leaving six people injured, police said.

Emergency responders rushed the SUV's driver to Elmhurst Hospital, where he died.

Investigators told ABC7 the man may have experienced a medical episode; the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the cause of the crash.

Four more men went to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition.

Police took Long Island resident George Conroy, 50, into custody at the scene and charged him with driving without a license.

The crash backed up traffic on the Long Island Expressway for hours Thursday.
