📰 News we're reading

• Two fast-moving fires under investigation in Queens (nbcnewyork.com) — Two serious overnight fires in Queens left at least 10 people, including a child, needing Red Cross help and heavily damaged a former restaurant in Springfield Gardens. Another blaze in Maspeth injured two people and drew a massive FDNY response, as investigators work to determine what sparked both fast-moving fires.

• NY bans anonymous child abuse reports to prevent misuse as harassment (theoaklandpress.com) — Queens residents should know New York will soon ban anonymous calls to the state’s child abuse hotline, aiming to curb malicious reports that disproportionately hit low-income families. Sponsored in part by Assemblyman Andrew Hevesi of Queens, the law will still shield reporters’ identities while requiring names and contacts, and takes effect next summer after hotline staff are retrained.
