Man Charged With Attempted Murder, Struck Officer With Stolen Car: DA

QUEENS, NY — A 19-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after striking an NYPD officer with a stolen car and then led police on a foot chase that ended on the roof of a building, prosecutors announced.

Keyah Richardson is also facing assault, reckless endangerment, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property charges, among others, prosecutors said

NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry released bodycam footage of the entire Aug. 18 incident in a post on X.

"Your Community Response Team officers risk their lives on a daily to reduce crime in NYC. During an attempted car stop of a stolen vehicle, this dangerous criminal decided to not only jeopardize the life of these officers, but the public," the post said.

“Don’t move, don’t move, police!” one officer can be heard saying in the video, drawing his gun.

Authorities had stopped the car as they were investigating a report of a stolen 2020 white Infiniti in front of 34-14 99th Street in Corona.

Richardson proceeded to reverse the car onto the sidewalk and almost hit a young child and her mother, prosecutors said.

The 19-year-old drove forward and struck Officer Bartholomew Tully was walking toward the front of the car.

Richardson fled the scene in the car but decided to ditch the vehicle a short time, opting instead to flee on foot, prosecutors said.

Police apprehended Richardson on the roof of 38-11 97th St. after a lengthy pursuit.

The injured officer was taken to a local hospital and treated for substantial pain in his hip, knee and ankle, prosecutors said.

If convicted, Richardson faces up to 40 years to life in prison.

"This defendant is accused of attempting to murder a New York City police officer with a stolen car and nearly striking an adult and child as he drove on a North Corona sidewalk," District Melinda Katz said. "Thanks to extraordinary police work, this defendant was arrested before anyone else could be harmed. I am grateful that the injured officer is recuperating from his injuries."
