Queens Soccer Stadium To Be Built In New NYC Deal: Report

The stadium is expected to be completed by 2027 as part of a development plan for a site composed of auto body shops, according to reports.

QUEENS — New York City Football Club and city officials have reached an agreement to build a 25,000-seat soccer stadium in Willets Point, the New York Times reported.

The stadium, which will rise near Citi Field, is expected to be completed by 2027, and is part of a development plan in a site composed of auto body shops.

“Queens, which is the world’s borough, now will become the home of soccer, which is the world’s sport,” Maria Torres-Springer, the deputy mayor for economic and workforce development, told the Times on Tuesday.

The New York City Football Club agreed to pay the entire $780 million to build the stadium and to sign a 49-year lease, with an option for a 25-year extension, the New York Times reports.

NYCFC has been searching for a stadium location since 2012 when the team was announced.

Originally, Flushing Meadows Corona Park was being considered as a site for the team, but plans for development were derailed by the public backlash.

Since then, several sites have been pondered over the years with no luck as several deals fell apart.

The established site for the stadium is owned by the city, which plans to build housing along with the football club’s site. The team will pay rent of up to $4 million a year.
