Melinda Katz Claims Victory In Democratic Primary Race For Queens DA

QUEENS —Melinda Katz appears to have swept the poll, claiming victory over challengers George Grasso and Devian Daniel for the Queens District Attorney seat, according to tallies from NY1 and The New York Times.

Katz claimed her victory Tuesday night after both news outlets called the race for the incumbent chief prosecutor in the borough.

Here is the breakdown of votes as of 10:05 p.m, according to the Board of Election website's unofficial results.

  • Melinda Katz: 70.8 percent (39,930 votes)
  • George Grasso: 14.6 percent (8,096 votes)
  • Devian Daniels: 14.2 percent (7,991 votes)

Katz, a first-term Democrat, claimed a reelection victory on Tuesday to occupy one of the most powerful positions in the criminal justice system. She defeated Grasso, a retired Queens Supreme Court judge, and Daniels, a public defender.

Katz received a law degree from St. John's School of Law and previously served as a member of the New York Assembly and the City Council, where she chaired the Land Use Committee.

She was the two-term borough president of Queens when she ran for district attorney in 2019, defeating public defender Tiffany Cabán for the Democratic nomination.

Grasso became an NYPD officer in 1979, patrolling Jamaica as a 22-year-old. He attended St. John’s University School of Law, where he graduated in 1984.

Daniels attended Brooklyn Technical High School and later attended Allegheny College, where she studied political science and minored in Spanish. Daniels worked as the Education Director at the ChaRosa Foundation, a Cambria Heights nonprofit.
