Here are the top three stories in Queens today:

  1. Two Queens lawmakers have secured a bill to upgrade environmental infrastructure in the borough. On Jun. 15, Congress Members Grace Meng and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with Senator Chuck Schumer, announced the House passage of the Water Resources Development Act of 2022, which includes a key measure to help make Queens more resilient in the face of climate change. Included in this bill is Meng’s provision to authorize the Army Corps of Engineers to spend up to nearly $120 million to work with the city in upgrading environmental infrastructure in Queens. 2. A Queens man is speaking out after being attacked by a suspect with a metal pipe. 51-year-old Mauricio Bermúdez was walking home on Roosevelt Avenue past a smoke shop on the corner of 80th Street in Jackson Heights when he was beaten by a stranger with a metal pipe after making an anti-Hispanic statement. NYPD is investigating Sunday night's attack as a bias attack; anybody with information is asked to reach out. (WABC-TV)
  3. A Woodside war hero was inducted into the State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame on Monday. Woodside resident Pedro Nieves, 96, served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. He was honored for a decorated career serving in the armed forces and for his dedication to his community, according to State Senator Michael Gianaris. Gianaris inducted Nieves during a ceremony at Sunnyside Community Services, located at 43-31 39th St. (Queens Post)
