Queens Faces The Most Traffic Deaths In The City So Far In 2023: Data

A report showed that 18 people have died in traffic-related incidents in Queens so far this year.

QUEENS — The largest borough in the city is contending with its biggest jump in traffic-related fatalities in the first three months of the year since 2013, according to a new report.

Data from the non-profit Transportation Alternatives showed that 18 people have died in traffic incidents in Queens so far this year, a 33 percent jump compared with the average first three months from 2014 through 2022.

Citywide, 51 people, including nine bike riders, have died in traffic-related incidents in 2023, the report said.

The council district with the most traffic-related fatalities was also in Queens. Council District 31, which encompasses Arverne, Brookville, Edgemere, and other southeast Queens neighborhoods, had six deaths.

“We know what works: smaller vehicles, slower speeds, protected bike and bus lanes, automated enforcement, and better street design – and we need our leaders to treat this crisis with the urgency it deserves,” said Danny Harris, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives.

Last year, 258 New Yorkers died in traffic-related incidents.
