Socrates Sculpture Park Announces Lineup For Outdoor Movie Festival

Eight movies from around the world will be featured in this year's outdoor cinema series.

ASTORIA, QUEENS — The long-running film festival at Socrates Sculpture Park is returning for its 19th season with eight new movies, to be shown for free every Wednesday at sunset between July 5 and August 23.

The festival, renowned for its selection of critically-acclaimed movies that celebrate various cultures, is made possible by a joint effort between the Socrates Sculpture Park, Film Forum and Rooftop Films.

This year it will feature movies from Mauritania, Sweden, Greece, Venezuela, Spain, France and the U.S., as selected by Film Forum director Karen Cooper. The movies will all be presented in their original language and will include English subtitles, organizers said.

Screenings will be accompanied by regional cuisines from neighboring Queens restaurants and performances by local musicians and dancers that celebrate the culture of the movie's country of origin. The pre-screening performances begin at 7 p.m.

Below is a full list of this year's movies, except for two movies that have yet to be announced.

July 5: Timbuktu (Mauritania/France): A man's struggle against the radical jihadists that try to impose Sharia law on a town in Mali.

July 12: Easy Money (Sweden): A man living a double life in an upper class areas of Stockholm starts selling cocaine to maintain his lifestyle after meeting a wealthy girl.

July 19: TBD

July 26: Chevalier (Greece): During a fishing trip on a yacht in the Aegean Sea, six men decide to play a game to decide who is "the best in general."

August 2: TBD

August 9: The Silence Before Bach (Spain): A documentary/drama centered around the transformational power of music.

August 16: Romance & Cigarette (USA): A Queens construction worker must choose between his wife and his mistress.

August 23: Bad Hair (Venezuela/Peru): After her nine-year-old son decides he wants to straighten his hair for a school photo, Marta's suspicions about her son's sexual orientation deepen.

Movies in the series are not intended for children.
