World's Fair Recreated | Queens Events This Weekend

Eat your way around the globe at "World's Fare," enjoy a Greek film Expo in Astoria, learn about World War I in Kew Gardens and more.

QUEENS, NY -- If you're looking for a way to celebrate the warm weather this weekend, Queens literally has a world of possibilities.

You can eat your way around the world at a recreation of the borough's famous World's Fair in Flushing, learn about Greek films at an expo in Astoria, or - if you're feeling ambitious - run a 5K in Jamaica.

The World's Fare

Neighborhood: Flushing

What: Relive some of the magic from the original World's Fair that graced Flushing Meadows Park More than 50 years ago at this two-day homage to the amusement park. The World's Fare, dubbed "a grand celebration of equality" and diversity in NYC, will feature more than 100 food and art vendors representing cultures all over the globe. Tickets range from $45 to $199.

When: Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29, noon - 8 p.m.


Friendly Farm Animal & Children's Fun

Neighborhood: Little Neck

What: Visit alpacas, pot belly pigs tortoises, goats and more at this petting farm event for just $5. While you're there, you can also play in a giant corn box or fly down the hay wagon slide. Take a pony ride for an extra $5 or a hayride for $3.

Where: Green Meadows Farm, 73-50 Little Neck Parkway

When: Saturday, April 28, or Sunday April 29, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.


Hilltopper Nation 5K Run & Walk

Neighborhood: Jamaica Estates

What: This two-loop 5K course starts and finishes at Mary Louis Academy, and runs through Jamaica Estates. Awards go to the top three male and female finishers; the top Mary Louis Academy participants in faculty, alumni and student categories; and the top three male and females in each age group. A breakfast of french toast will be served after the event

Astoria Park Beautification

Neighborhood: Astoria

What: Join the Astoria Park Alliance for a day of park cleanup at this volunteer event. Gloves and all other necessary equipment will be provided, but make sure to wear close toed shoes and an outfit appropriate for outdoor work. Volunteers are also encouraged to wear sunblock and bring plenty of water.

Where: Astoria Park Track Field House, 19 19th St.

When: Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m. - noon


Free Mammograms

Neighborhood: Jamaica

What: A free mobile clinic will offer free digital mammograms and clinical breast exams to NYC women ages 40 and up who haven't had a mammogram in the last year. Call 917-500-5779, 917-803-2501 or 877-628-9090 to make an appointment.

Where: The New Jerusalem Worship Center, 122-05 Smith St.

When: Saturday, April 28, 2 - 4:30 p.m.


Drag Queen Story Hour

Neighborhood: Ridgewood

What: Lola Lemon will come dressed in her most glamorous drag attire to read stories, sing songs and make crafts with kids of all ages.

Where: Supermoon Art Space, 753 Onderdonk Ave.

When: Sunday, April 29, 10 a.m. - noon


Greek Film Expo 2018

Neighborhood: Astoria

What: The Hellenic Film Society, created to share Greek films with American audiences, will debut its inaugural series on a daylong overview of the range of current filmmaking in Greece. Screenings include: Polyxeni, Jamaica and Blue Queen.

Where: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave.

When: Sunday, April 29, 1:30 - 8:30 p.m.


1919 World War I Cavalry

Neighborhood: Kew Gardens

What: Learn about the life of a soldier from World War I from living historians of the war and meet the horses saddled and equipped for battle at this event to mark the 100-year anniversary of WWI's end. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

Where: Victorian Section of Maple Grove Cemetery, 83-15 Kew Gardens Road

When: Sunday, April 29, 10:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
