Body Found In LI Pool ID'd As Man Wanted In Connection With Dad's Fatal Stabbing: PD

EAST SHOREHAM, NY — The man found deceased in an East Shoreham pool on May 25 has been positively identified as Matthew Zoll, police said.

Zoll has been sought in connection with the stabbing death of his father at their Rocky Point home since November, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, Zoll’s cause of death has yet to be determined.

On May 27, police said they believed the body of a man found in the East Shoreham pool may be that of Zoll.

"Detectives believe there is a strong possibility the body of the man found in the swimming pool in East Shoreham on May 25 is Matthew Zoll," police said at the time. "The male was not wearing shoes, was wearing clothing similar to what Zoll was wearing when he was last seen, and the home is in close proximity to the location where Zoll was involved in a single-vehicle crash the night of the murder. "

A Long Island homeowner removing a pool cover found the man's body, police said.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives investigated after the man was found at about 4:20 p.m. on May 25, authorities said.

Suffolk County police homicide squad detectives believe Zoll crashed a black GMC Yukon SUV at the intersection of 25A and the William Floyd Parkway on November 9 at approximately 1:35 a.m.

Detectives believe Zoll suffered injuries from the crash, authorities said.

Zoll, 23, was wanted for the murder of his father, Joseph Zoll, 61, and police launched a massive, months'-long search to find him, authorities said.

Seventh Precinct officers responded to 30 Quail Road at approximately 1:25 a.m. on Nov. 9 after a 911 caller reported a stabbing at the location, police said. When officers arrived, they located Joseph Zoll stabbed; he was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

According to Newsday, the home where Zolle was found in the pool is owned by a Suffolk police detective, who is also a member of the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force.
