East Hampton Business Closing Doors After 27 Years

EAST HAMPTON, NY —A well-known eatery on the East Hampton canvas is closing its doors after 27 years.

Babette's, located on Newtown Lane, will be serving its last meal on Sunday — and founder and owner Barbara Layton said she wants to thank the community "for years of inspiration and love."

Over the years, the eatery was frequented by locals and celebrities. Layton was known for embracing organic fare and clean eating.

Her original vision, she said, was to “make healthy eating cool, exciting, and rich with ambiance".

During the pandemic, Layton said, as were so many others, the business was struggling. She created a GoFundMeto try and make it through those uncertain days.

To her longtime clientele, Layton said: “My love and admiration for East Hampton is unbounded and I am excited to see the unfolding of our next adventure — as individuals and together. We are a community of vision. We are a community of strength and love. We are a community of courage and wisdom. We are committed to inspiring one another to always be better as we honor those who came before us, creating this heavenly place we call home — East Hampton.”

Layton also thanked her co-creator Daniel VanDerBeek, her son Zach, her mother, and all the friends she "had the honor and privilege to meet throughout the lifetime of Babette’s," she said.

Babette’s will be open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All are invited to stop and "celebrate the conclusion of this chapter, and to celebrate the excitement of the next chapter for us all," Layton said.
