High Wind Warning Issued For All Of LI Wednesday: NWS

Residents are advised to fasten loose objects or put them in a secure place before the winds commence, the NWS says.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A high wind watch, for a period extending from Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday evening, has now been expanded to cover all of Long Island, according to the National Weather Service — with heavy rain also in the forecast.

According to Dominic Ramunni, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Upton, a previous high wind watch for Suffolk County was upgraded Tuesday afternoon to a high wind warning and expanded to encompass all of Long Island, for the period covering Wednesday afternoon through evening.

Two to three inches of rain are expected, he added, with high temperatues in the mid 60s.

Winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts of up to 60 mile per hour, are possible, the NWS said.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, and widespread power outages are possible, the NWS said, adding that travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. There's also the chance of some coastal erosion, Ramunni said.
