Riverhead High School Students Learn About Legal Careers, Importance of Diversity in Law
RIVERHEAD, NEW YORK—Riverhead High School students in the school’s criminal justice course and women’s empowerment club recently attended an inspiring event at John P. Cohalan, Jr. Court Complex at the Suffolk County District Court in Central Islip. Led by Riverhead High School class of 2003 alumnus Kera Reed, the event featured a panel of legal professionals who shared their experiences, encouraged students to fulfill their potential, and showcased the power of diversity in law.
“The trip was an incredible opportunity for students to see the many career paths within the legal system and hear from professionals who have overcome challenges to get where they are today,” said Riverhead High School social studies teacher Alison Bauernfeind. “It reinforced the message that confidence and perseverance can lead to success in any field.”
The students, chaperoned by Ms. Bauernfeind and Riverhead High School Spanish teacher Andrea Hernandez Gallegos, eagerly took part in this impactful event. Riverhead alumnus Kera Reed—who is of counsel at Ruskin Moscou Faltischek, P.C. and the Suffolk delegate for the Women's Bar Association—steered the event as students learned from panelists about their career journeys, challenges, and daily responsibilities.

The panel included two judges, a deputy chief clerk, a judge’s secretary, a court officer, a translator, and a court reporter. The discussion also highlighted the importance of women in the legal field and maintaining a work-life balance. Students from St. Anthony’s High School, North Shore High School, William Floyd High School, and the Sachem Central School District attended the event as well.
“The key message of the event was to ‘inhale confidence and exhale doubt,’ encouraging students to believe in themselves and their potential,” said Ms. Bauernfeind. “This trip provided invaluable experience for students interested in legal careers and reinforced the idea that diverse voices and backgrounds strengthen the justice system.”
