YONKERS, NY — The Empire City Casino is raising awareness of food insecurity issues in a way that can't be missed this month.

September marks Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to inspire individuals to learn about food insecurity in their communities and support the mission of ensuring neighbors of all ages are well-nourished. At Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts, the efforts are in effect year-round, but especially noticeable this time of year.

"Giving back to our communities and serving our neighbors through MGM Resorts' philanthropic pillars is part of our company culture and DNA," Empire City VP Taryn Duffy explained. "As more New Yorkers face food insecurity, the resources local organizations need is increasing, and we are incredibly honored to be able to support initiatives to address food insecurity through our nonprofit partners."

Empire City’s focus in combating food insecurity comes as the number of New Yorkers in need continues to rise. At the same time, Empire City officials point out, organizations on the front lines face reduced donations due in large part to inflation and rising food costs.

According to Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, food pantries, and local meal programs of which Feeding Westchester is a member, more than 44 million in the United States face hunger. Many turn to organizations like those supported by Empire City for food assistance. In New York State, roughly one in seven individuals struggle with hunger, including one in five children.

As part of Empire City’s commitment to the community and its support of reducing food insecurity, area nonprofits are again receiving tens of thousands of dollars in funding from Empire City this year. That includes financial support of Feeding Westchester and Food Bank for New York City to ensure neighbors have access to the food they need today.

In addition to providing monetary assistance, Empire City will light its iconic porte cochère orange nightly throughout September in honor of Hunger Action Month.

"Feeding Westchester is deeply grateful for Empire City Casino by MGM Resorts’ year-round support," Feeding Westchester CEO said. "With one in three Westchester households at risk of hunger, it is crucial that we continue our work together to help our neighbors in need put food on their table. This year for Hunger Action Month, we’re asking Westchester to Wear Orange and Take Action. Empire City has dressed their entire facility in orange as the lighting of their iconic porte cochère shines a bright orange spotlight on the fight against hunger."
