Irvington Coach, Girls Basketball Team Honored

It’s no wonder that the Irvington Girls High School Basketball team did so well this season with its leader being named “Coach of the Year.”

The Lady Bulldogs won the New York State Federation Class B Tournament for the third time in four years; its fourth New York Public Schools Class B Championship in a row; their fifth straight title league and fourth straight section one Class B title.  The team's record was 25-2 this season and is 105-6 over the last four seasons and 38-1 post season.

As a reward for their victories the Village of Irvington and Irvington Fire Company are throwing the five state championship-winning teams, a community picnic on Sunday. The event, which will include food and entertainment, is open to the public and will be held at Scenic Hudson Park from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In addition to their efforts, the Bulldogs’ success can be attributed to their coach, Gina Maher, who was selected by the Russell Athletic National Women’s Basketball Coaches Association as the 2013 District 2 Coach of Year. She has been with Irvington schools for several years, leading the girls team through numerous victories including three New York State Championships.

Maher was also in the top four votes for the National Coach of the Year and was selected to be an assistant coach at the 2013 WBCA High School All-American Game in New Orleans presented by NIKE in April.
