Irvington Schools Responds to Sandy Hook Tragedy

The Connecticut Tragedy and Supporting Our Children

All of us in the Irvington Union Free School District are deeply saddened by the events that took place in Newtown, Connecticut this morning.  Be assured that as a school community we take student safety as a top priority.  Throughout the day, District officials were in close contact with Mayor Smith and Police Chief Cerrone who elevated security in and around each of our schools.  This collaboration will continue for the foreseeable future to ensure that our school community is as safe as possible.  Additionally, each school has a detailed emergency plan that is reviewed and updated regularly to address a variety of scenarios.  As with all situations, this tragic event will be used as a learning experience for us all. 

Throughout this weekend, we believe it is important that you consider talking with your children about this situation.  When doing so, please keep the following in mind:

• Allow children to express their feelings through any variety of mediums;
• Validate your children's emotions;
• Be mindful of your own emotions and how they could be projected upon your children;
• Limit exposure to media and news;
• Maintain regular routines and enjoy family time together; and
• Be mindful of any changes in your children's behaviors that may demonstrate their anxiety or concern.

You may also consider reviewing the National Association of School Psychologists resources linked below, which offer guidance on how to speak to children about violence.  When school reopens on Monday, our counselors and school psychologists will be available should any students need support.  As always, should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's school.
