Irvington's Imamura Running For County District 12 Legislator

He is looking to fill the vacancy created when MaryJane Shimsky was elected to the state Assembly. The special election will be Feb. 28.

IRVINGTON, NY — A special election will be held Tuesday, Feb. 28 to fill a vacancy in the Westchester Board of Legislators that occurred when MaryJane Shimsky was elected to the state Assembly.

David Imamura is running unopposed to represent the 12th County Legislative District, which serve the villages of Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson and Irvington and parts of unincorporated Greenburgh, including Edgemont and Hartsdale.

Imamura said he wants to serve his community.

“Westchester County needs leaders ready to tackle the issues facing us as a county, state and nation,” he said.

Imamura describes himself as a progressive candidate who is focused on advancing the values of Westchester residents by fighting for the issues of affordable housing, sustainability, efficient transportation, affordability, rebuilding the infrastructure, campaign finance reform and social justice.

If elected, he would be the Board’s first Asian-American legislator.

The Board of Legislators said, upon certification of the election results by the Board of Elections, the winner can be seated immediately to serve the remainder of the 2022-23 legislative term. However, the winner must run again later this year to retain the seat.

Imamura is a lifelong Westchester resident. He served as chairman of the New York State Independent Redistricting Commission, co-chairman of the Westchester Asian American Advisory Board and a member of the Westchester Human Rights Commission.

He is a graduate of Irvington High School, Dartmouth College and Columbia Law School.

Polls in the 12th District will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Early voting for the special election is from Saturday, Feb. 18 to Sunday, Feb. 26. The times are:

  • Saturday, Feb. 18 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 20 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. (holiday hours)
  • Tuesday, Feb. 21 from noon until 8 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 23 from noon until 8 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 24 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Early voting centers for the special election are:

  • Hastings-On-Hudson Public Library, 7 Maple Avenue, Hastings-On-Hudson, NY 10706
  • Greenburgh Town Hall, 177 Hillside Avenue, White Plains, NY 10607

The last day to postmark a voter registration application for the special election is Feb. 13. It must be received by the county Board of Elections by Feb. 17.

Feb. 17 is the last day to register in person to be eligible for the special election.

If you want to vote by absentee ballot, the last day for the Board of Elections to receive an application, letter, fax, email or absentee online portal request for the special election is Feb. 13. For more information, go here.
