Local Police Take Precautions in Wake of Batman Shooting; IMAX Showings Still Scheduled

In the wake of a fatal shooting in an Aurora, CO movie theater premiering the new Batman film The Dark Knight Rises, area police are taking precautions.

"Due to the tragic incident in Colorado, the Clarkstown Police Department is advising area patrols to keep a close watch on all movie theaters located within the town," said Clarkstown Police spokesperson Sgt. Jo Anne Fratianni in a statement. "Although we have no threats to any movie theater at this time, we will be increasing officer presence in an effort to combat any copycat scenarios." 

"The Clarkstown Police Department is asking the public to contact 911 immediately if they see or hear anything suspicious," Fratianni added.

A lone gunman opened fire in the crowded Colorado movie theater early Friday morning, killing 12 moviegoers and wounding another 59. Police quickly captured the suspected shooter, 24-year-old James Holm.

Police are saying Holmes was armed with a shotgun, an assault rifle, a handgun and body armor.

In Rockland, the Batman film is being shown at Clearview Cinemas in New City and IMAX and regular theaters at the in West Nyack.

Management at the Palisades IMAX declined to give specifics to the press, but confirmed no showings have been cancelled as a result of the incident. All Friday showings are currently sold out, according to signs posted at the location.

Management could not say if any ticket buyers had attempted to return their purchases, or if costumes would be banned from the screenings.
